Winter This or That

Winter This or That is a cozy, low-prep speaking warm-up that encourages students to share opinions while building confidence in spoken English. Using winter-themed choices, students practise expressing preferences in a relaxed and visually engaging way, making it suitable for mixed-level classes from A1 to B2.

How to use

1. Show one winter-themed choice at a time (e.g. hot chocolate or tea, snowy walk or staying at home).

2. Students choose one option and say which they prefer.

3. Students explain their choice, using language appropriate to their level:

   • A1–A2: simple words and sentence starters (I like… because… / I choose…).
   • B1–B2: fuller explanations, comparisons, or personal examples (I prefer… because…, I’d rather…).

4. Let students share ideas in pairs, small groups, or as a whole class.

This activity works well as a quick warm-up or speaking break and helps activate winter vocabulary, opinions, and fluency in a fun, low-pressure way.
