Winter Break Recap

Warm-Ups
A1 A2 B1 B2 Winter & Holidays

Winter Break Recap is a short, low-prep speaking warm-up designed to help students reflect on their winter holidays while revising key grammar and building confidence in spoken English. Adapted for multiple levels, it encourages personal expression through simple vocabulary choices and guided speaking support.

How to use

  1. Ask students to think of three words that best describe their winter break.
  2. Students share their words and explain why they chose them, speaking individually or in pairs.
  • A1–A2: Provide a list of word options (e.g. fun, quiet, cold, busy, relaxing) and sentence starters to support speaking, such as: My winter break was… / I chose this word because…

  • B1–B2: Encourage students to use useful modifiers for speaking (e.g. quite, rather, extremely) and expanded sentence starters with extra follow-up questions, such as: My winter break was quite… because… What made it feel this way? / Would you like a similar break next year?

This activity works well as a whole-class warm-up, pair discussion, or short speaking circle at the beginning of a winter-themed lesson.
